A virtue to practise
Honesty
Honesty is telling the truth and acting fairly, even when a lie or a shortcut would be easier.
What honesty means
Honesty builds trust. When people know you tell the truth, they can believe what you say and rely on you. Being honest also means being honest with yourself, and owning up when you get something wrong. You can be honest and gentle at the same time: tell the truth, and be kind about how you say it.
How to practise honesty
- Own up to a mistake quickly, before anyone has to ask.
- Give back extra change, or anything that isn't yours.
- Do your own work, and give credit to the people who helped you.
- When you need to say something hard, say it truthfully and kindly.
