A virtue to practise
Detachment
Detachment is noticing your feelings without letting them take charge, and doing your best without needing everything to go your way.
What detachment means
Detachment does not mean you stop caring. You still care, but you choose how to act instead of just reacting. It helps you stay steady when you lose a game, when plans change, or when someone says something unkind.
How to practise detachment
- When you feel upset, name the feeling to yourself before you say or do anything.
- Give your best effort, then let the result be what it is.
- When a plan changes, take a breath and look for what is still good.
- Notice something you keep wanting, and ask yourself whether you really need it.
